How it works

- 200 OK — The called party answers; the SBC exchanges Session Description Protocol (SDP) bodies specifying codec, IP address, and port for the RTP media stream.
- ACK — The originating endpoint confirms the session parameters, and two-way RTP media begins flowing.
- BYE — Either party sends a BYE message to terminate the session and release the channel.
The Session Border Controller is the critical enforcement point. It handles network address translation (NAT) traversal, enforces codec negotiation (commonly G.711 at 64 kbps or G.729 at 8 kbps), provides toll fraud prevention, and applies quality-of-service (QoS) policies. SIP trunking vs. PRI (Primary Rate Interface):
PRI delivers 23 bearer channels (B-channels) per physical T1 circuit at a fixed capacity. SIP trunks are software-provisioned and can scale in single-channel increments.
